Me-Made-May-Mania

julia bobbin
The day I got my own sewing machine, wearing the first dress I ever made

Hello possums!

It's that wonderful time of the year again where strangers are nice to each other and families gather together and share a meal. No it's not Christmas, it's the month of May.
Why is May so special you ask?
Because it's my birthday month. BAM!

Now intellectually I understand that there must be other people out there in the world that have their birthday in May also. It is not just my birthday month (what-evs). In fact my brother Daniel was even clever enough to be born in May. Good for you Daniel.
I have also come to terms with the realisation that my birthday is not a public holiday. Yet.
But I still like to get a bit fancy in that blessed month and why the heck not. And who doesn't like cake for crying out loud.

One of the things I'm doing for my birthday month is participating in the Me-Made-May by Zoe over at the sewing blog 'So Zo, What do you know'.

The challenge is to wear clothes that you have made for the entire month of May. You can choose how many items you wear and how many days of each week you'll wear them.

I originally thought I would try and wear something every day of the month. I sure have made a lot of clothes so it couldn't be too hard right?

Wrong.

When I looked in my closet I was reminded that 90% of the garments that I sew are a bit 'fancy-pantsy' and not exactly going to work well in the work place.

Hmmm ...
So I've re-assessed and I've decided to commit to wearing my garments four times each week for the month of the May.

Here's my pledgy-wedgy:

'I, Julia of JuliaBobbin sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May '12. I endeavour to wear a me-made garment four days each week for the duration of May 2012'*
*probably ...

Challenge accepted.

So who else is in?

  2. Ohhh, I'm rather tempted, I have been thinking it is time for me to sew a few more dresses for myself... The last two dresses I made myself are my current favourites :) There might be a little repetition on my part though... Off to check it out now!

  5. Dang, I have not made enough clothing for this, but I'm starting to! Happy birthday! I'm a May baby, too! Mine sort of competes with a national holiday. It's actually on Memorial day this year. But hey, 3 day weekend!

  6. Happy birthday month! I also tend to think of the month of May as my month, but I'm at the tail-end of it and often have to compete with Memorial day in the US. But I just pretend that all those backyard BBQs and fireworks are at least partially for me!

I have the bad taste to have been born in July and not May, but that's why I never went to class during that day (summer holiday in France)! Grown-up, It was such a bad experience the first time I had to go to work ! What ??? My boss won't understand I just can not wok today ???

  16. Perhaps instead of wearing your fancy pantz dresses to work you could dress for dinner each night, each night wearing a different dress. That way you get an excuse to get dressed up & feel all fancy & special AND you'd be participating in Me-Made-May. :D

  17. Happy birthday! I totally think you should rock your fancy dresses to work... it'd be a treat to see the reactions! :D

  18. I'm a May baby too (May 28th, to be exact!). I'm participating in MMM'12 but a bit nervous about it--I currently only have 2, maybe 3, completed items and four UFOs. The UFOs are a bit fancy pant, so I doubt I'll wear them. Most likely I'll be making stuff as I go along. I pledged to wear something me-made three times a week--which is challenging as I work from home and mostly wear my "lounge" (read: pajama) pants most days!

  19. Me too, me too!! I also feel my May birthday should be a National holiday. I'm loving your challenge, but most of my handmade clothes are cool weather gear. However, you did mention the whole, I make fancy things I hardly ever get to wear, dilemma... I have that too...
