Robin Scherbatsky Dress - Vogue 1190

Vogue 1190, Julia Bobbin, Robin Scherbatsky

What up Washington DC! Julia Bobbin is loitering your streets!

Yes that's right, Ms. Bobbin and her Australian passport have jet setted over to the business end of the U.S.A. and is absolutely loving it.

I arrived Friday evening after a 20 hour plain ride. Yes. that's right.

When I finally arrived at Dulles International airport I felt like I had been hit on the head with a piano. I also looked like I had been punched in the face about three times. With steel knuckles.  You know you look bad when small children look at you and start crying for no reason.

Thank the good Lord for coffee.

Because I am away for training for a week and a half, I haven't had the opportunity to photograph any of my new outfits, so I thought I'd share a dress with you that I made about ten months ago using Vogue Pattern 1190, a Tracy Reese design.

I had this pattern in my stash for quite some time and had never really been motivated to make it. Then one night I was minding my own business sitting on the couch, chip crumbs down my top watching one of my favourite shows 'How I met your mother'. The awesome Robin Scherbatsky makes her pretty way onto the TV screen and I cry out in surprise! The character is wearing a Tracy Reese dress and By Jove! it's the dress that I have the vogue pattern for!
There is nothing more motivating then seeing a celebrity wearing a dress that you know you can recreate.

Challenge accepted!

So I got busy with some purple polyester satin and here is the result.

Obviously the colours are different to the Scherbatsky version, but the style is the same.

I shortened the bodice at the shoulder seams by two cm's and I changed the skirt to a half circle for a more flattering fit on me.

I contrasted the purple with a black bow and waist band.

If I made this dress again I would re-think the bodice. The shape is quite low cut and as a result pretty revealing. Maybe I could just invest in a few well placed snap closures, or raise the neckline somehow.

I love the girliness of this dress and I think it looks lovely in a purple.

On a side note, I am in love with Washington D.C! On day one of my schedule I visited a fabric store which I'm sure will surprise none of you. I made my way over to Exquisite fabrics, which is aptly named and almost started hyperventilating. The store, jam packed with couture fabrics and imported delights was having a 50-70% off sale on all their freaking fabrics!
Holy seam-ripper! This stuff never happens to me!

The store is relocating and will be closed temporarily from next Saturday so their stuff has been significantly reduced. It took considerable self discipline to not start bawling my eyes out as a result of over stimulation. Once I got my vitals going again I ravaged the store and came out 2 hours later, $200 poorer and full of song.

I think I'm going to like it here ....

    2. Yay! We are in the same city then! The cherry blossoms are stunning and how nice has the weather been this week! I thought it was going to be cold so I brought a coat and a scarf, seeing as I'd just come from Summer in Australia. But I've been wearing summer clothes all week! Fabulous!
Oh my goodness Sue, there was such amazingness at Exquisite Fabrics. I will definitely be sharing some photos soon :)

  4. When I flew from Dulles to Sydney, I wanted to cry. Several friends recommended I take sleeping pills to get through the flight. I'd already had to go from Dulles to LA with a several hour layover with another 20 hour flight to Sydeny. I took a dose of pills and woke up assuming at least eight hours must have passed. It was only 20 minutes later. I took a second dose and woke up 20 minutes after that. I almost took a third does but decided I wanted to make sure I *could* wake up! Enjoy DC! The Cherry Blossoms are starting to bloom!

    1. Hahaha Cidell I know EXACTLY how you're feeling! I wanted to stab my self in the eye on the trip over, it's so long. I'm glad to hear to that the flight didn't result in an overdose, that was a close call :)

DC is stunning and the cherry blossoms are out in force. So pretty :)

    1. Oh Marysews, you are tempting a beast! I planned on going to G Street Fabrics, but after two shopping excersions to Exquisite Fabrics, I don't know if it's safe! I may still pop my head in tomorrow morning before I leave to go back to OZ. I'm seriously concerned about the weight of my luggage. Fabric is heavy!

  11. Your dress is stunning, what a beautiful job you've done and yes a lovely color! That's amazing luck at finding that store having a sale.

I had a similar experience on a trip last year when I was looking for wool suiting for a men's victorian suit I was making and found a store closing with wool imported from Scotland on for $9.99/m!

    1. Thanks Bri!

Well done with the fabric for $9.99! I love it when that happens! I just wished it happened more often. Mind you I would become poor very quickly if I was surrounded by fabric sales. :)

  12. Love your new dress, but frankly I would invest in a hook an eye. That little peek a boo of bra cheapens the look. But maybe its a generational thing (I was born in the 50s).

  15. Hi Julia, this is my first feed of your blog, which I stumbled upon a week or so ago and absolutely love! I'm a seamtress too, and used to make all my clothes growing up until it became unfashionable. Now it's all the rage again. I love seeing your Mad Men takes and How I Met Your Mother and Robin are favorites too.
I was born near Baltimore in Annapolis and I'm jealous of your visit! Have a wonderful time and stay inspired.

    1. Hi Laurie,
Thanks so much for reading! It's so nice to meet others that enjoy sewing as much as I do and glad to hear that you were onto the craze before it became popular :)

Thanks so much for your lovely comment, very much appreciated. Hopefully I'll get to visit your corner of the U.S. one day too! xxx

    1. I'm not quite sure that U.S. Immigration would allow me to stay on the strenght of a dress, unless of course the officer is a seamstress.

Totally loving DC and I'm sad to be leaving tomorrow. I will be taking fond memories (and a few extra kilos) of Mexian food with me back home.

  17. Welcome to DC, Julia. You're right in my backyard. It's unlikely you'll find me in yours anytime soon...though I'm dying to make the trip. Coincidentally, I just decided to throw my just-made Mad Men dress into your pile. You being in town must be an omen ;-)

Your purple Tracey Reese dress is magnificent, btw.

  20. Robin's from MY neck of the woods so now you have to visit B.C. Canada! :) Your dress comes off much more glamorous than hers though; there's something about satin that just doesn't say 'Let's go to the mall' LOL ;)

    1. Thanks Symon! I would love to visit Canada. My husband has relatives there and they have been pushing for us to come and visit them. We'll be heading to New York in June so we just might swing over there as well. I've heard only good things about Canada :)
